I wonder why the American Civil Liberties Union doesn't lobby against gun control.

After all, they call themselves "our nation's guardians of liberty." One would think an organization that "works daily ... to defend and preserve the individual rights and liberties guaranteed to all people in this country by the Constitution" would strongly support the 2nd amendment to that Constitution.

It is probably fair to say the ACLU generally pursues what would be considered liberal causes. Let's look at a few. The ACLU:

  • supports a national moratorium on executions

  • opposes the outright criminalization of drugs

  • supports equal treatment for lesbians, gay men and bisexuals

  • wishes to strengthen prisoners’ rights through class action litigation

  • supports a woman's right to choose abortion

Well, enough, you get the drift. Not that there's anything wrong with any of those positions ... it is fair to say they are issues core to the liberal political persuasion ... and they are core to personal liberties, so the ACLU takes an interest.

So, one would think they would also be quite interested in fighting the powerful gun control lobby. Yet, the official ACLU position is, "there is no constitutional impediment to the regulation of firearms."

It simply seems odd to me that the liberty especially espoused by the conservative movement in this country is the one the ACLU chooses to sidestep.

I know ... the 2nd amendment is open to a million interpretations, but what it says is, "A well regulated militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed." Double standard ACLU?
